FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Hamilton, Ontario - November 4, 2024
As parents of autistic and neurodiverse children ourselves, Balance SSCS has long advocated for increased and better supports for autistic children and their families in Ontario.
Not only do we help parents/caregivers navigate the complex system of services, but we work collaboratively with the government to find ways to improve publicly funded programs such as the Ontario Autism Program (OAP).
One area of concern that we've brought up in our meetings with the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services is service capacity. There is an increasing demand for providers - especially for underserved regions and groups.
When the government rolled out their Capacity Action Plan in 2021, we were encouraged to finally see concrete initiatives to help address this issue. Included in the plan were Workplace Capacity Fund grants meant to help providers increase their service capacity. At the time of implementation, however, there was a committment to just three rounds of grants. As more families start to access Core Clinical Services funding, we stressed that these grants had to continue.
So, we are pleased to see that application for a fourth round of grants opened up last week with a prioritization on providers that offer services to Northern, rural and remote communities, as well as Francophone and Indigenous families.
Balance SSCS welcomes this continued commitment to capacity-building activities and projects that help more families access core clinical services in the OAP.
